CARBONDALE - A group of about 40 people celebrated Independence Day on Saturday by calling for America to return to the Christian foundation of government they said was laid out by the founding fathers.
For the first hour of the event, as rain poured from the sky, attendees at the Jackson County Constitution Party's Patriots rally listened to speakers, including Randal Stufflebeam of Belleville, a retired Marine who plans to run a second gubernatorial campaign next year.
Once the rain subsided, the crowd took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the federal government and the way the country has changed in the past 230 years. Rain continued to fall, but event organizers said it only added to the symbolism of the event.
"This is like the troubles that are pouring down around us," said Jeff Trexler, Southern Region coordinator for the Constitution Party. "It's everywhere."
Stufflebeam said a two-party system has ruined American government, and it's time for people to have the representation they need in government. He became the state chairman of the Illinois Constitution Party after retiring from a 22-year career in the military, and when he couldn't find anyone from the party willing to run for governor in 2006, he did it himself.
In most elections, like the 2006 gubernatorial election, voters find themselves voting for the candidate they believe to be the "lesser of two evils," Stufflebeam said. His plan for the upcoming election is to reach out to the percentage of Illinoisans who did not vote last time and show them they have a candidate to support.
"As long as you keep voting for the lesser of two evils, guess what you continue to get? Evil," he said.
